Birmingham Royal Ballet - The Maiden of Venice

Birmingham Royal Ballet performs Carlos Acosta's reimagining of La Bayadère set in Renaissance Venice, with live orchestra, at Sunderland Empire.

Carlos Acosta's new production reimagines the 19th-century ballet classic La Bayadère in Renaissance Venice, telling a story of love, lust, betrayal and murder. Admiral Sandro returns to Venice to marry the Doge's daughter, only to rediscover his childhood love Nicoletta, who is about to become a nun — and Bishop Olivolo, who also loves her, vows to destroy him. The production features Minkus's original score played live by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, designs by Anna Fleischle and the celebrated Kingdom of the Shades sequence. Performances run about 2 hours 45 minutes.
