Alfredfest 2026
About
A weekend festival in Wantage celebrating King Alfred the Great with a children's opera workshop, a procession, Saxon talks, a museum lunch and a preview recital of a new opera.
Alfredfest is Wantage's annual celebration of King Alfred the Great, who was born in the town, held over the weekend of 24 and 25 October 2026. The programme opens with a free music workshop for children aged six and over, who learn part of the children's chorus from a new opera about Aethelflaed. Sunday features a procession and prayers at the King Alfred statue, a set lunch at the Vale & Downland Museum, free talks by Jude Barrett on the Alfred Jewel and other Saxon treasures and by Mike Carden on writing historical fiction about the Saxon past, and closes with a preview recital of Aethelflaed: A New Opera, sung in Old English.
