Picts, Paint and Parchment Workshops and Evening Lecture
About
A day of Pictish-themed craft workshops for ages 11–16, free family activities and an evening lecture on vellum-making and the Book of Kells at Tarbat Discovery Centre.
The afternoon offers three hour-long hands-on workshops for young people aged 11–16: calligraffiti with Thomas Keyes using spray paint and stencils inspired by the Book of Kells, leather carving with Hamish Lamley of Pictavia Leather, and metal bangle-making with Rona Dalgleish of Wasted Remains Jewellery. From 1–5pm free activities in the Hall include Pictish board games, St Brigid's Cross weaving and colouring for younger children. At 7:30pm Thomas Keyes delivers the lecture 'From Hide to Manuscript: Testing the Tarbat–Kells Connection', presenting findings from his experimental reconstruction of the hide-soaking tank found at the 8th-century monastic site at Portmahomack and what it suggests about vellum production there and the theory that the Book of Kells was made at the site.
