Staging Pride & Prejudice Exhibition at Jane Austen's House
About
An exhibition at Jane Austen's House exploring the 1930s stage adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, especially the 1935-6 Broadway and West End hit.
This exhibition looks back at the theatrical adaptations of Pride and Prejudice of the 1920s and '30s, focusing on Helen Jerome's Pride and Prejudice: A Sentimental Comedy in Three Acts, which ran on Broadway and in the West End in 1935-6 and helped shape how the novel is viewed today. It is co-curated by Devoney Looser, Regents Professor of English at Arizona State University, whose work includes studies of the 1935 performance of Colin Keith-Johnston as the first 'sexy Darcy'. The exhibition runs throughout 2026 and is included with entry to the house.
