About
Prof. Laura Saetveit Miles and Dr Maryanne Saunders Klein examine how medieval depictions of Birgitta of Sweden and St Anne used books and scale to convey women’s religious and intellectual authority.
In a Sacred Traditions and the Arts seminar, Laura Saetveit Miles discusses Birgitta’s legacy in English woodcuts, while Maryanne Saunders Klein examines images of St Anne with books and exaggerated scale. Their papers consider how these visual choices expressed women’s spiritual, literary and intellectual authority.
