Dinner Party: With Matthew Smith, Jacob Epstein, Olivia Bax
About
Leeds Art Gallery exhibition reuniting Matthew Smith's paintings and Jacob Epstein's sculpture with contemporary artist Olivia Bax's work, revisiting a 1940s Temple Newsam show.
This exhibition revisits a pioneering wartime exhibition organised by then Leeds Curator Phillip Hendy for Temple Newsam House during the Second World War, when the City Art Gallery was closed. It brings back together Matthew Smith's intense, vibrant paintings and Jacob Epstein's raw modernist bronze sculpture, which resonated with visitors in the rooms of the Jacobean country house. Eighty-four years on, a third guest joins them: contemporary artist Olivia Bax's sculpture and assemblages for floor, wall and table, bringing fresh perspectives to the conversation. The gallery is open Tuesday–Saturday 10am–5pm and Sunday 11am–3pm, closed Mondays.
