About

Explore how people in Hampshire prepared for and enjoyed evenings out between 1750 and 1820.

This exhibition follows a Georgian night out from choosing clothes and cosmetics to travelling after dark and reaching theatres, assembly rooms, gardens and country houses. Rare books, manuscripts, fashion plates and artworks sit alongside a 1730s embroidered waistcoat, a 1799 fan made from magazine pages, accessories, sedan chairs, gambling tokens and tickets. The displays also examine newspaper accounts, caricatures and literary depictions of nightlife. Co-curated by University of Southampton historians Dr Julie Gammon and Professor Maria Hayward.
