This event cinema screening presents the National Theatre Live film of The Motive & the Cue, Jack Thorne's play directed by Sam Mendes. Set in 1964, it follows Richard Burton, newly married to Elizabeth Taylor, as he rehearses an experimental Broadway Hamlet under John Gielgud's exacting direction, with two ages of theatre colliding as their collaboration threatens to unravel. Mark Gatiss plays Gielgud in an Olivier Award-winning performance, with Johnny Flynn as Burton and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor; the production was filmed live during its sold-out 2023 London run.
