About

A 45-minute lunchtime talk by Dr Gregory Salter on the Kitchen Sink School and masculinity in 1950s British art, at Millennium Gallery.

Dr Gregory Salter, Lecturer in Art History at Birmingham, discusses the Kitchen Sink School, focusing on John Bratby and Jack Smith, whose paintings of families and homes explored changing ideas of masculinity in post-war Britain. The talk examines how these works reveal shifting relationships between men, women and domestic work, and tensions between breadwinner expectations, the companionate father and anxieties about a disappearing 'traditional' masculinity. The in-person session lasts 45 minutes.
