About

A subtitled big-screen encore screening of National Theatre Live's The Motive and the Cue, Sam Mendes' filmed play about Burton, Gielgud and the 1964 Hamlet.

This MAC screening shows the recorded National Theatre Live production of Jack Thorne's The Motive and the Cue, directed by Sam Mendes and filmed live during its sold-out 2023 London run. Set in 1964, the play follows Richard Burton as he prepares to play Hamlet on Broadway under John Gielgud's exacting direction, with tensions between actor and director threatening to unravel the production. Mark Gatiss's Olivier Award-winning performance as Gielgud features alongside Johnny Flynn and Tuppence Middleton. The screening runs around 180 minutes, is rated 15, and will be shown subtitled in the auditorium.
