Talk – Black Americans in c19th Essex and Suffolk
About
Dr Hannah Murray gives a free afternoon talk on Black American anti-slavery campaigners who toured nineteenth-century Essex and Suffolk.
Dr Hannah Murray explores the largely forgotten story of Black American freedom fighters who travelled through nineteenth-century Britain campaigning against slavery, racism and oppression. The talk focuses on their connections with Essex and Suffolk, the lectures they delivered to local audiences, and the impact of their campaigns on British society. Drawing on extensive historical research, it brings to life individuals who crossed the Atlantic to tell their own stories and enlist British communities in the struggle for freedom. Refreshments and a raffle accompany the event.
