Nidderdale Adders – survey and genetics
About
Two speakers describe Nidderdale's adder survey programme and a DNA study of the local adder populations' genetic health.
Dr Kelly Harmar, Biodiversity Officer at Nidderdale National Landscape, presents the NNL reptile project, a rolling programme of surveys since 2017 that has recorded over 30 adder hibernation sites, five believed to hold nationally significant populations. She explains why Nidderdale matters for adders and how new sites are located. Dr Will Askew of Natural England then describes a project with Bangor University examining DNA samples from adders in Nidderdale, the North Pennines, Norfolk and Suffolk to assess genetic health and inform conservation planning.
