About

A Garden Room display about William Marwood, the Horncastle cobbler and Methodist preacher who became a Victorian hangman and pioneered the long-drop method.

The display boards trace Marwood’s life and his eleven-year career, during which he carried out more than 170 executions. They also connect his story to Boston: his first execution was William Horry, whose family was associated with a prominent local brewing family. The boards are loaned by Horncastle History & Heritage Society; a booklet is available for sale. No booking is needed.
