About
An exhibition tracing Scarborough’s rise as a seaside resort through its spa waters, healing springs, holiday culture and seaside entertainment.
The exhibition begins with Thomasin Farrer’s 1626 discovery of reddish rocks and salty water at South Bay, then follows sacred springs, the early spa, changing holiday habits and the town’s beach and entertainment history. An accompanying Animated Objects installation brings together a Victorian bathing machine, soundscape, South Bay artwork shaped by local contributions and a reconstructed pump-room section.
