Man to Man

Manfred Karge's Man to Man follows a woman in 1930s Germany who puts on her dead husband's trousers and never takes them off, enduring war, dictatorship, hunger and humiliation as she fights to stay alive. More than 30 years after originating the role in the 1987 UK premiere at the Traverse, Tilda Swinton returns to the stage as Ella/Max. The production reunites director Stephen Unwin and designer Bunny Christie ahead of a transfer to the Berliner Ensemble and a New York run in Spring 2027.
