New Acquisition: A Curious Cabinet
About
An exhibition exploring C. R. Ashbee's 1890s cabinet, its design, conservation mystery and original Chelsea interior.
Court Barn's new acquisition is a cabinet designed and made by C. R. Ashbee in the 1890s for his home at 37 Cheyne Walk, London, its form inspired by the house's oriel window. The exhibition recreates an impression of Ashbee's sitting room using an illustration published in The Studio in 1895, including its 'peacock-blue' wallpaper and fireplace tiles. It also examines a conservation mystery: the cabinet is now white, but a deep teal interior was revealed beneath, suggesting it was once painted to match the house's dramatic interior. The display closes by inviting visitors to reflect on their own relationships with the objects they live with.
