Fences

A working-class father in 1950s Pittsburgh battles poverty, racism and his own demons while trying to hold his family together.

Denzel Washington directs and stars in this 1950s-set drama as a Pittsburgh sanitation worker whose frustrations over race, money and missed chances strain his marriage and his relationship with his son. Viola Davis co-stars as his devoted yet increasingly weary wife, in an adaptation of August Wilson's celebrated stage play. A powerful character study of family, duty and regret.
