About
Professor Daniel Maudlin gives a talk on how elite travellers' experiences of inns shaped British imperial placemaking between 1650 and 1850.
Professor Daniel Maudlin of the University of Plymouth delivers an evening talk tracing the journey of an elite traveller through the North Atlantic world. He argues that inns were far more than places to eat, drink and sleep: 'principal inns' in Scotland, Virginia and Jamaica provided the spaces and objects ruling elites needed to establish and maintain power. The talk runs for 90 minutes and explores how the material world of these inns shaped perceptions of place as familiar, 'civilised' and British.
