Marine Survey Day – Sea Watch and Shoresearch
About
A two-part coastal survey day combines high-tide marine-mammal observation with intertidal species recording at St Bees.
The morning Shoresearch records intertidal species in randomly placed quadrats. If time allows, participants can also do a walkover and timed searches for indicator species. The shore is rough, uneven and slippery; the work requires reasonable physical fitness and mobility. The afternoon Sea Watch is stationary land-based observation at high tide from a higher location, looking for signs of dolphins, seals, porpoises and other large animals. The source notes that this section is often wheelchair accessible and asks participants to contact the organiser in advance about access needs. Both halves are led by trained Marine Champions. At St Bees, the published schedule lists morning Shoresearch 9:00–11:30 followed by afternoon Sea Watch 12:30–14:30.
