About

Dr David Pugsley gives a talk on two famous duels, including the 1803 Montgomery–MacNamara duel and the 1833 Haldon racecourse duel, the last known duel in Devon.

Dr David Pugsley, a specialist in the history of duelling and author of An Introduction to the Law, Practice and Etiquette of Duelling in English Legal History, presents a talk for the Devonshire Association. He recounts the 1803 duel in which Colonel Robert Montgomery was fatally wounded by Captain James MacNamara, a former resident of Spring Garden in Station Road beside the Woodlands Hotel. He also gives a dramatic account of the last known duel in Devon, in which Judge John Jeffcott fatally wounded Dr Peter Hennis at Haldon racecourse in 1833. Tickets are sold on the door and no booking is required.
