What I Paint Is History
About
The first UK solo exhibition of self-taught African-American artist Sam Doyle, bringing together over 20 paintings and sculptures chronicling St Helena Island's Gullah community.
The Gallery of Everything presents the first UK solo exhibition dedicated to Sam Doyle (1906–1985), a self-taught African-American artist who worked in house paint on corrugated roofing tin, sheet metal and found lumber. Over 20 paintings and sculptures, many shown publicly for the first time, portray the people, beliefs and histories of St Helena Island, South Carolina, where Doyle displayed his work as the St Helena Outdoor Art Gallery. Highlights include a rare depiction of the root doctor Dr Buz, a figure whose image was collected by Jean-Michel Basquiat and gifted to Andy Warhol.
