About

Professor Tony Crowley gives a talk on the history of Liverpool English, followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Professor Tony Crowley explores the history of Scouse, tracing how Liverpool's vocabulary and accent emerged from the city's multicultural past, with questions such as the origins of 'scoff' and why 'scouse' is called 'scouse'. The talk includes a short reading from his book Liverpool: a memoir of words, followed by an audience Q&A and the chance to buy signed copies of his books. The event runs for 90 minutes and is part of Smithdown Litfest 2026.
