About

Explore Ely’s castles and their role in the 12th-century Anarchy, including Bishop Nigel’s castle-building and Geoffrey de Mandeville’s fortifications.

The exhibition examines where Ely’s castles may have stood, why the Isle’s fenland setting made it a stronghold, and the local effects of the conflict between Stephen and Matilda. Entry is included with a museum admission ticket or valid annual pass.
