Trimontium Guided Walk
About
Weekly guided walks from Melrose or Newstead to the Trimontium Roman fort site, exploring its history and archaeology in the Borders landscape.
The Trimontium Museum runs guided walks to the site of the Roman fort at Newstead, with a choice of a full 3.5-hour walk from the museum in Melrose past Melrose Abbey and Newstead, or a shorter 1.5-hour circular walk of the fort site itself starting at Newstead village at 2.30pm. A guide explains what life was like for those who lived and worked at the fort, drawing on discoveries from archaeological digs over the last century, including the original 1905–1910 excavations. Walkers take in views of the River Tweed and the Eildon Hills, and combined Walk & Museum tickets offer discounted rates with an optional 12-month annual museum pass. Booking is essential, and dogs are welcome.
