Dispersal: Picturing Urban Change in East London
About
A free display of photographs documenting the 284 trades and businesses displaced from Lea Valley by the 2012 Olympics development.
Between 2005 and 2007 photographers Marion Davies and Debra Rapp systematically documented 80 trades and businesses in the Lea Valley between Stratford and Hackney Wick that were displaced to make way for the 2012 Olympic Games development, from belt-making and zinc galvanising to salmon smoking. The display presents this archive of images alongside the surrounding landscape, all colour photographs by Debra Rapp and all black and white photographs by Marion Davies, made in collaboration with Juliet Davis. It invites reflection on the area's industrial and working-class history and on how cities can revive cultures of making while supporting new creative practices.
