About
The panel discusses the restoration of Castle Howard’s Tapestry Drawing Room after the 1940 fire and its reconstruction around four tapestries designed and woven for the room in 1706.
The room remained an empty shell after the 1940 fire. The restoration brief was to imagine an architectural treatment John Vanbrugh might have created while incorporating four Vanderbank tapestries made for the room in 1706. Architect Francis Terry, sculptor, carver and gilder Clunie Fretton, and master plasterer Philip Gaches discuss their work.
