Caribbean Pioneer Gardeners: exhibition
About
An exhibition at Beeston Library exploring six Caribbean gardeners of the Windrush generation and their legacy at Nottingham's Hungerhill Gardens allotments.
This exhibition tells the little-known story of Caribbean migrants who cultivated plots at Hungerhill Gardens (now St Ann's Allotments), England's oldest and largest allotment site. It features interviews, photographs and a new poem by Carla Thompson, drawing on the book Caribbean Pioneer Gardeners by Colin Haynes and material from a 2005/6 English Heritage Open Days exhibition. The six gardeners, brought up on smallholdings in Jamaica, share their experiences in their own words, describing how they grew familiar crops in a colder climate, built greenhouses from scrap materials and produced vegetables for their families and community.
