About

Belgian central bank Governor Pierre Wunsch gives a keynote talk arguing Europe is stuck in a new Eurosclerosis, chaired by Paul De Grauwe.

Pierre Wunsch, Governor of the National Bank of Belgium, delivers a keynote talk hosted by the LSE European Institute and OMFIF. Drawing on his recent policy paper, he argues that Europe is in a period of Eurosclerosis 2.0: despite repeated 'EU grand plans', growth has fallen to very low levels and an innovation gap persists versus the US and China. He contends that old recipes of higher spending and more Europe no longer work, and explores three policy challenges — technology, institutional set-up and geopolitical positioning — while asking whether Europe can still thrive as a low-risk, low-return society. The event takes place in person at the Marshall Building and online, with Paul De Grauwe chairing.
