Sam Jackson: What Remains of Her
About
An exhibition of Sam Jackson's oil-on-board portraits of queens, princesses and other notable women from history.
Sam Jackson's new series presents portraits of female figures of historical note, from Cleopatra and Boudicca to Anne Boleyn, Catherine de' Medici, Marie Antoinette and Queen Victoria. Painted in a uniform head-and-shoulders format, the works are imaginative likenesses built from secondary sources, folk tale and the artist's imagination rather than life. The loose, gestural brushwork and scattered letters and phrases evoke an icon-like regality, offering a romantic counterpoint to the austere male portrait traditions of the seventeenth century.
