About

Caird Fellow Ema Sala discusses the clothing and gendered experience of nineteenth-century sailors described in contemporary sources as “female sailors.”

In Turner room, off the Great Hall, Ema Sala examines how clothing shaped sailors’ identities and how women who sailed as men obtained and wore it, beginning with J. M. W. Turner’s The Battle of Trafalgar.
