About
An exhibition surveying Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen's photography of communities facing redevelopment, spanning over 50 years of her career.
This exhibition revisits the career of Finnish-British photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen through major projects including Byker, Coal Coast, Step by Step and Byker Revisited. Her black-and-white Byker series (1969–1983) documents the impact of Newcastle's East End redevelopment on its community, while Byker Revisited (2003–2009) returns in colour to photograph the area's new residents. Her photography and films are inscribed in the UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register.
