Phantom Melodies and Tangerine Trees: A Voyage Through the Psychedelic Musical Experience
About
An illustrated, interactive lecture by Professor Milton Mermikides exploring how music evokes psychedelic states of consciousness.
Professor Milton Mermikides, 37th Gresham Professor of Music, delivers a talk on the intersection of musical and psychedelic experiences, covering themes such as the 'magical mundane', sensory blending, hallucination, altered perceptions of time and self, and transcendence. Using musical illusions, perceptual experiments and examples from The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Tchaikovsky and Steve Reich, the lecture examines how music can evoke and illuminate altered states of consciousness. The event is organised by the Oxford Psychedelic Society and lasts 90 minutes.
