About

A free guest lecture by entomologist Jim Córdoba-Alfaro on insect conservation and community science on Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, introduced by George McGavin.

The first in the Royal Entomological Society's new Guest Lecture series, held at the RES Library & HQ. Jim Córdoba-Alfaro describes twenty-five years of conservation work on the Osa Peninsula, from building the Insectopia Discovery Center and its 8,000-specimen collection to protecting 700 acres of private rainforest reserve. The talk covers daily protection work, monitoring programmes using collections, camera traps and bioacoustics, and why community science schemes in the tropics must be built on livelihood rather than leisure. The talk runs 15:00–18:00 with registration, a Q&A, drinks and nibbles, and optional tours of the library and HQ.
