Romantic Wales: Turner and his contemporaries
About
An exhibition of Welsh landscapes by J. M. W. Turner and fellow Romantic artists, alongside a Turner sketchbook and later Neo-Romantic works.
The exhibition brings together Welsh landscapes by Turner and other British Romantic artists, including Samuel Palmer, David Cox Sr, Richard Wilson, William Havell and Paul Sandby. A sketchbook from Turner’s early South Wales visit is displayed with works depicting Llandovery Castle and Llanddowror Mill. Prints, journals and travel guides give context to Romantic artists’ responses to Wales’s landscape, history and political and industrial changes. Later works by John Piper and Graham Sutherland show a Neo-Romantic response to South Wales.
