Marking African History Season: It Was Also About Other Black Musics
About
Music historian Kwaku reveals how Harlesden and Brent were vital to soul, jazz, funk, hip-hop and Afrobeat, not only reggae, through its record shops, clubs and radio stations.
While Harlesden and Brent are celebrated as the heartbeat of British reggae, independent history researcher and historical musicologist Kwaku, a Brent resident, reveals how the area was equally vital to a wide range of other black music genres -- from soul, jazz, funk and hip-hop to Afrobeat and beyond -- through its iconic record shops, clubs, community venues, and pirate/community radio stations. Visitors are invited to bring a vinyl record with a Brent connection to play and discuss. No booking required, drop in.
