Mid Week Saint Katherine Special 2026 Tour of Royston Cave
About
A guided 40-minute tour of Royston Cave, a mysterious man-made medieval chalk cave beneath Royston's streets.
Royston Cave offers guided tours of its bell-shaped, man-made chamber, cut eight metres into the chalk beneath Royston's ancient crossroads. Discovered in 1742, the cave features medieval-style Christian wall carvings including the Crucifixion and saints such as St Catherine and St Christopher, alongside figures thought to be Pagan fertility symbols. Its age and purpose remain unknown, with theories ranging from use by the Knights Templar to a private chapel or hermitage. Tours last approximately 40 minutes and involve 21 steps and uneven, slippery ground.
