A geological perspective on mountain hazards in a changing world: lessons from the 2026 Nepal–Tibet disaster - Public Lecture
About
Dr Maximillian Van Wyk de Vries examines the 2026 Nepal–Tibet disaster and the connected hazards that shape mountain regions. This hybrid lecture includes audience Q&A.
The talk uses the August 2026 Nepal–Tibet rock–ice collapse as a case study in how geologists assess mountain risk and how one event can trigger connected hazards across borders. Dr Maximillian Van Wyk de Vries, who had recently been in the region with Chinese and Nepali colleagues, discusses landslides, glaciers, volcanoes and glacial lakes, and considers how climate change, landscape evolution and infrastructure affect future risk. The advertised talk and Q&A run from 18:00 to 19:00; a drinks reception follows, with the event ending at 20:00. In-person and Zoom attendance are offered.
