Helios: Unique Art Installation of the Sun by Luke Jerram
About
A 1:200 million scale illuminated sculpture of the Sun by Luke Jerram, displayed at Exeter Cathedral throughout February 2027.
Luke Jerram's Helios is a 1:200 million scale replica of the Sun, allowing visitors to inspect its detailed surface, including sunspots, spicules, filaments and the source of the solar flares behind the May 2024 Northern lights. The imagery was compiled from around 400,000 photographs by astrophotographer Dr Stuart Green and NASA observations, with guidance from solar scientist Professor Lucie Green of UCL. The installation combines solar imagery with animated lighting and a sound composition by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson, and invites reflection on the Sun's importance for light, warmth, energy, culture and religion. It runs during the Cathedral's standard open hours.
