About

A drop-in talk by Dr Alice Brumby exploring how disabled First World War veterans fought the state for support in post-war Britain.

Dr Alice Brumby, Senior Lecturer in Health History at York St John University, gives a talk for York Disability Week on men who returned from the First World War with lasting disabilities. The talk examines whether the state honoured its promise of a 'Land fit for Heroes', how government and society attempted to readjust disabled veterans to civilian life, and how successful those efforts were. It includes time for reflection and discussion, with space to consider future activities around disability history.
