Yule at Sutton Hoo
About
A family-friendly Yule celebration at Sutton Hoo exploring Anglo-Saxon mid-winter traditions with exhibitions, decorations, crafts and a tree trail.
This seasonal event explores how mid-winter was marked long before Christmas, with traditions the Anglo-Saxons buried at Sutton Hoo's Royal Burial Ground would recognise, such as family gatherings, decorating and feasting. Visitors can see a Yule feasting table in the High Hall exhibition, discover Christmas across the decades in Tranmer House, and view a temporary display of extracts from Edith Pretty's father's travel diary describing her 1901 round-the-world Christmas. Decorations by the Busy Bees volunteer sewing team, a tree trail decorated by local schools and community groups, Yule-themed craft activities in the Discovery Room and a quiet play space in the Stables complete the programme.
