Black Rain

A young Hiroshima survivor tries to rebuild her life after the bombing, while fear of radiation exposure repeatedly damages her prospects for marriage.

Based on Masuji Ibuse’s novel, Imamura’s black-and-white drama follows Yasuko and her family between the bombing’s devastation and their efforts to resume ordinary life. The ICA describes the work as an intimate account of the lasting physical and psychological effects of Hiroshima. The Japanese title Kuroi ame and the page’s director/year distinguish it from the unrelated US film with the same English title.
