The Colour of Pomegranates [Sayat Nova]
About
Screenings of Sergei Parajanov's 1969 Soviet drama The Colour of Pomegranates, a visual poem on the life of Armenian poet Sayat Nova.
Sergei Parajanov's 1969 masterpiece portrays the 18th century Armenian poet Sayat Nova, the 'King of Song', not through conventional biography but as a cinematic expression of his work. Key moments of his life are depicted in a series of exquisitely orchestrated tableaux rich in colour and iconography, each scene like a celluloid painting with stylised movement. The 80-minute film, rated PG, stars Sofiko Chiaureli, Melkon Alekyan and Vilen Galstyan, and is featured in the cinema's Short-Ass Movies, The Classics, World Cinema and Letterboxd Top 500 seasons.
