Lost, Banned, Reclaimed: The Colour of Pomegranates + Introduction
About
A screening of Sergei Parajanov's restored 1969 film The Colour of Pomegranates, introduced by season curator Ali Lalfam.
Sergei Parajanov's 1969 film tells the story of eighteenth-century Armenian poet Sayat-Nova through static, painterly tableaux divided into thematic chapters including Childhood, Youth, the Prince's Court, the Monastery and Death. Shot with a static camera in the style of Armenian manuscript illuminations and Persian miniatures, the film was suppressed, re-cut and restricted by Soviet authorities for decades. This screening, part of the Lost, Banned, Reclaimed season, uses the restoration by Cineteca di Bologna/L'Immagine Ritrovata and The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project and will be introduced by season curator Ali Lalfam. The film runs 78 minutes and is 18+.
