Thirty-Six Views of a Haiku: Poetry and Translation Workshop
About
A two-hour creative workshop exploring haiku translations and writing your own versions, led by literary translator Heidi Clark.
This workshop considers haiku as a form and examines why different translations of the same poem vary, before participants write versions of their own. Topics include seasonality and how seasonal symbols differ between countries, syllable count and rhythm in Japanese versus English, and how writing for a specific audience shapes translation choices. Aimed at anyone interested in poetry, creative writing and translated literature; no Japanese language knowledge is required as glosses are provided for all source texts. The session is led by literary translator, zine-maker and Translators' House Press co-founder Heidi Clark.
