Creative Writing and Translation Workshop: The Poetry of Sappho
About
A two-hour workshop translating Sappho's Ancient Greek poetry into English, led by poet and translator Grace Calk.
Participants work with two of Sappho's poems alongside an English gloss, so no knowledge of Ancient Greek is needed. The session explores how a single poem can yield multiple translations, how different readings of a word create difficult choices, and how earlier translations, damaged papyrus and Ancient Greek culture shape the result. Everyone leaves with their own translations and a deeper sense of translation's complexities. The workshop is led by Grace Calk, whose collected translations of Sappho are published by Translators' House Press.
