Simon Armitage for Gilgamesh
About
Poet Laureate Simon Armitage discusses his new verse translation of the ancient epic Gilgamesh at Christ Church, Bath.
Simon Armitage, Poet Laureate and Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds, presents his verse translation of Gilgamesh, the ancient Mesopotamian epic nearly 4,000 years old. The poem follows the demigod king of Uruk and the wild man Enkidu, from rivalry and comradeship through battles with Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven to a lone quest for immortality. Armitage's version aims to bring the epic alive as poetry while honouring its inherent fragmentation, accompanied by illuminating commentary. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
