ERO Presents: Coin hoarding in Late Saxon Essex
About
Philip Wise examines two eleventh-century Essex coin hoards, why they may have been buried and what their coins reveal about local currency use.
Philip Wise examines two Essex finds: the Braintree hoard, including coins of Edward the Confessor and Harold II and two Byzantine issues, and the Hatfield Peverel hoard of Æthelred II pennies. The talk considers why the coins may have been buried and what the finds reveal about how coins were used in eleventh-century Essex. Check-in, tea and coffee are available from 10:00; the talk begins at 10:40 and runs until 12:00. The public entrance is on the path beside the River Chelmer. ERO warns that Google Maps walking directions lead to the back of the building; its Getting Here page gives what3words knee/librarian/catch.
