Kayhan Kalhor and Erdal Erzincan: Persian and Turkish Improvisations
About
Kayhan Kalhor and Erdal Erzincan perform an instrumental duo concert blending Persian and Turkish traditions through improvisation at City Varieties Music Hall.
Kayhan Kalhor and Turkish baglama player Erdal Erzincan present a duo concert drawing on the classical music traditions of Persia and Ottoman Turkey, which share the ancient modal system known as maqam. Their performance is built around improvisation, with instrumental compositions flowing into one another like a continuous work as the two instruments echo and improvise on shared phrases. The duo, who released the album The Wind on ECM in 2006, weave ecstatic rhythms and melodic passages into what the page describes as an intensely spiritual and emotional performance.
