The Folklore of Halloween

Writer Margaret Holbrook gives a free lunchtime talk on the history of Halloween and its links to modern celebrations.

Margaret Holbrook explores the history of Halloween and how it connects with today's celebrations, from ghosts and mischief-making to Victorian fortune-telling about marriage. She considers how trick or treating arrived from America, the similar feasts between late October and early November, and the religious festivals of All Hallows, All Saints and All Souls. The talk is part of The Atkinson's free lunchtime talks programme and lasts an hour.
