Talk - Emily Hobhouse and Amy Key Clarke - Two Westcountry Women Who Made a Difference
About
An International Women's Day talk by Elaine Henderson on two Westcountry women: humanitarian Emily Hobhouse and academic and women's rights advocate Amy Key Clarke.
Marking International Women's Day 2027, this talk profiles two remarkable women born in the Westcountry whose lives took very different paths. Emily Hobhouse, a vicar's daughter, became an international humanitarian activist, loved and hated for her lifesaving work in South Africa. Amy Key Clarke was a brilliant academic and scholar and a quiet but forceful advocate for women's rights in higher education. The library notes that the presentation contains details and images of war and its repercussions which some may find distressing.
